Reports from Spain indicate a period of significant unrest within the Real Madrid dressing room following a physical confrontation between senior defender Antonio Rüdiger and teammate Álvaro Carreras. According to the Spanish radio station Onda Cero, the German international allegedly struck Carreras during a heated dispute, highlighting growing tensions within the squad.
The altercation reportedly reached a breaking point approximately two weeks ago, following Real Madrid’s 1–1 draw against Real Betis. Sources suggest that this was not an isolated event, as the two players had been involved in several verbal disagreements leading up to the physical clash. The atmosphere in the locker room intensified post-match, resulting in the reported assault.
Rüdiger, 33, has faced increasing scrutiny this season regarding his conduct on and off the pitch. His disciplinary record has been a point of contention, notably involving an incident where he was accused of intentionally striking Getafe left-back Diego Rico in the head with his knee. Furthermore, the German defender drew criticism for disparaging remarks made toward Bayern Munich’s Josip Stanišić.
In an attempt to restore harmony, the defender hosted a lunch last Friday, inviting his teammates and their families to encourage reconciliation.
Despite the apology, the sporting consequences have fallen disproportionately on the younger player. Since the altercation, Álvaro Carreras has been notably absent from the starting line-up. Manager Álvaro Arbeloa opted for Ferland Mendy in the subsequent fixtures against Real Betis and Espanyol. When Mendy was forced off due to injury, Arbeloa chose to deploy Fran García rather than Carreras. Observations from the bench suggest that Carreras reacted to this snub with a derisive smile, further indicating the friction between the player and the technical staff. In contrast, Rüdiger has remained a constant presence on the pitch, playing the full duration of the last two matches.
| Player | Position | Age | Status in Recent Matches | Contract Expiry |
| Antonio Rüdiger | Centre-back | 33 | Starter (Full 180 minutes) | Summer 2024 (Potential Extension) |
| Álvaro Carreras | Left-back | 21 | Benched (Unused substitute) | Long-term |
Despite the internal friction and his volatile reputation, Rüdiger’s future at the Santiago Bernabéu remains a subject of negotiation. His current contract is set to expire this summer; however, club officials are reportedly considering a one-year extension. The management appears to value his defensive contributions and experience, even as they navigate the complexities of his recent disciplinary issues within the squad.
As Real Madrid continues its campaign, the focus remains on whether Arbeloa can successfully manage these interpersonal conflicts or if the divide between the veteran defender and the peripheral squad members will continue to impact team selection.
