A 15-year-old boy was killed after being struck by an unidentified vehicle on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in the Jorarganj area of Mirsharai upazila on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Shahin Alam, son of Abul Hossain, a resident of East Raypur under Ward No. 8 of Durgapur Union in Mirsharai.
According to highway police sources, the accident occurred on the Chattogram-bound lane of the busy national highway near the Sonapahar area. Officers on routine patrol reportedly received an emergency alert through the national hotline service 999 informing them of a road crash.
After receiving the call, a patrol team from Jorarganj Highway Police Station rushed to the scene and found the teenager critically injured. He was immediately rescued and transported to Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex, located in Mastannagar, for emergency treatment. However, doctors later declared him dead while he was undergoing medical care.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge Sharifuzzaman Bhuiyan of Jorarganj Highway Police Station said the authorities acted swiftly after being alerted through the national emergency service.
“After receiving a call from 999, our patrol team went to the scene and rescued an injured individual. He was taken to hospital, where he later died. The vehicle involved in the incident and its driver fled the area. Further legal procedures are currently under way,” the police official said.
Authorities have yet to determine the type or registration details of the vehicle responsible for the fatal collision. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
The Dhaka–Chattogram Highway is one of Bangladesh’s busiest transport corridors, connecting the capital with the country’s main seaport city. The route frequently witnesses traffic congestion, heavy cargo movement and road accidents, particularly involving speeding vehicles and pedestrians attempting to cross unsafe sections of the highway.
Road safety experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stricter traffic law enforcement, improved pedestrian crossings, and enhanced surveillance systems on major highways to reduce casualties.
Police said efforts are ongoing to identify the fleeing vehicle, including reviewing possible witness statements and examining nearby surveillance footage if available.
