The announcement was made ahead of the 127th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, with the formal award ceremony scheduled to take place on 23 May at Bangla Academy. The annual observance traditionally brings together scholars, cultural practitioners and admirers of Nazrul’s work, highlighting his enduring influence on Bangla literature, music and revolutionary thought.
Fatema Tuz Zohra has long been regarded as one of the leading interpreters of Nazrul Sangeet in Bangladesh. Over several decades, she has performed extensively on national television, radio broadcasts, and international cultural stages, helping introduce Nazrul’s compositions to younger audiences. Her artistic journey is closely associated with efforts to keep the classical and thematic richness of Nazrul’s songs relevant in contemporary musical practice.
In addition to her performance career, she has been actively involved in teaching and mentoring emerging artists. Through workshops, training programmes, and institutional engagement, she has contributed significantly to the preservation of authentic rendition styles within Nazrul Sangeet, ensuring that traditional nuances are not lost over time.
Alongside her, noted researcher Rashidun Nabi has also been named a recipient of this year’s award. His scholarly contributions on Nazrul’s life, literary philosophy, and socio-political thought have played an important role in expanding academic discourse on the poet. His essays and publications are widely referenced in Bangla literary studies.
Reacting to the honour, Fatema Tuz Zohra expressed deep emotional resonance with the recognition, stating that she had at times felt overlooked despite her years of commitment to music. She described the award as a profound surprise and a source of renewed encouragement, adding that it would strengthen her resolve to continue working for Nazrul Sangeet.
