Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, a distinguished Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court and a former member of the Bangladesh Awami League Presidium, has passed away. He breathed his last on Saturday, 23 May 2026, while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital, Dhaka. The news of his demise was confirmed via a social media statement by his long-term political and professional colleague, SM Rezaul Karim.
Yusuf Hossain Humayun was a formidable figure in both the legal fraternity and the national political landscape of Bangladesh. Throughout his extensive career, he held several prestigious positions within the legal sector. He served as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and held the office of Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council. His influence extended to regional legal leadership as well, having been elected President of the Barisal District Bar Association on multiple occasions.
In the political arena, he was a high-ranking official of the Bangladesh Awami League. Having served as a member of the Presidium, the party’s highest decision-making body, he later transitioned into a role as a member of the Advisory Council. His historical significance in the party is underscored by his election as a Member of Parliament from a constituency originally vacated by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
One of the most critical junctures of his career occurred during the 2007–2008 tenure of the military-backed caretaker government. During this period, commonly referred to as the “1/11 era,” he served as one of the primary legal counsels for the then-arrested Awami League President, Sheikh Hasina. His role in providing legal defence during those proceedings solidified his reputation as a steadfast legal expert during times of national political crisis.
The late jurist was widely respected across party lines for his professionalism and legal acumen. At the time of his passing, he left behind his wife, two sons, a daughter, and a vast circle of well-wishers and professional colleagues. His colleague SM Rezaul Karim described him as a “universally respected” figure whose contributions to the Bar and the State remained significant until his final days.
