Iran Closes Western Airspace Amid US Strike Fears

The Iranian Civil Aviation Organisation has officially announced the temporary closure of Western Iran’s airspace effective Saturday, 23 May 2026. This strategic decision follows intelligence reports indicating that United States military forces are preparing for potential new strikes against Iranian targets. The suspension of civilian aviation activity in this sector highlights the intensifying geopolitical friction between Tehran and Washington.

Restricted Operations and Airport Closures

According to an official statement issued by the Iranian aviation authority, all civilian flight permissions within the western sector of the Tehran Flight Information Region (FIR) have been suspended until further notice. This measure has severely curtailed domestic and international air travel across the country.

Currently, only eight airports remain operational throughout Iran. These include major hubs such as Tehran’s Mehrabad and Imam Khomeini International Airports, as well as facilities in Isfahan and Yazd. However, even these operational sites are subject to stringent new protocols:

  • Daylight Restrictions: Flights are strictly limited to daylight hours, operating only from sunrise to sunset.

  • Mandatory Re-authorisation: Airlines are required to obtain fresh clearance from the Civil Aviation Organisation for every individual flight.

  • Route Divergence: Civil aircraft are being rerouted to avoid the restricted western corridor entirely.

Escalation of Military and Political Tensions

The decision to close the airspace coincides with reports from US-based outlets, including Axios and CBS News, which indicated on Friday that the US administration is weighing military options. Speculation regarding an imminent conflict was further heightened when President Donald Trump altered his weekly schedule to remain in Washington, D.C., rather than attending previously planned engagements.

Category Status and Restrictions
Airspace Status Western Iranian FIR closed to all civilian traffic.
Operational Airports Reduced to 8 (including Mehrabad and Imam Khomeini).
Flight Timing Restricted to daylight hours (sunrise to sunset).
Approval Process New individual permit required for every takeoff/landing.
US Posture Heightened readiness; Presidential schedule modified.

Concurrent Diplomatic Efforts

Despite the visible military escalation, back-channel diplomatic efforts reportedly remain active. Sources indicate that negotiators are still attempting to reach a potential agreement between Tehran and Washington to de-escalate the situation. However, the suspension of civilian flights suggests that Iranian authorities are prioritising national defence and the safety of civilian infrastructure over the immediate continuity of transit. The international community continues to monitor the region closely as the deadline for a diplomatic breakthrough nears amidst these defensive manoeuvres.
