Storm Warning for Eleven Districts

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a short-term weather alert forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by squally winds across eleven districts of the country by this evening. The advisory indicates that wind speeds may reach up to 60 kilometres per hour, raising concerns for river transport, rural settlements, and outdoor activities.

According to the latest inland river forecast issued at around 11:30 am and valid until 6:00 pm today, temporary gusty or squally winds are expected to sweep across several regions from the west and north-west. These conditions are likely to be accompanied by rain or thundershowers in multiple areas, potentially causing sudden disruptions in daily life and transportation networks.

Authorities have advised that river ports in the affected regions display cautionary signal number one, indicating the possibility of adverse weather conditions. This precaution is particularly important for vessels navigating busy inland waterways where visibility and stability may be compromised during thunderstorms.

The districts under the warning include Rajshahi, Pabna, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Tangail, Faridpur, Madaripur, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, and Sylhet. Meteorologists have warned that these areas may experience sudden bursts of rain, lightning activity, and strong wind gusts that could reach 45 to 60 kilometres per hour.

Residents in the affected districts have been urged to remain cautious, particularly those living in low-lying and open areas. Farmers, day labourers, and fishermen are advised to take precautionary measures due to the risk of lightning strikes and sudden weather deterioration. The authorities also recommend that people avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms and ensure that loose objects are secured outdoors.

In riverine zones, ferry operators and small boat users have been instructed to exercise heightened vigilance and comply with safety instructions issued by local port authorities. Sudden wind surges and reduced visibility may pose navigational hazards, especially on busy inland routes connecting major commercial and rural hubs.
