An official publication by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Headquarters has disclosed the investigative details surrounding the targeted homicide of a college student, Ismail Hossain, also known as Imon. The case study, featured in a January volume titled ‘Investigation of Unidentified Bodies and Clueless Murder Cases’, outlines how a meticulous, multi-tiered conspiracy was disguised as a casual social gathering on a religious holiday.
Imon, a resident of Dhaka, was enrolled as a student at a local college. He had previously been in a romantic relationship with a young woman who, at the time of the offense, was an eleventh-grade college student. Following their estrangement, the young woman’s marriage was arranged with another individual, identified as Kamruzzaman.
According to the PBI investigation and the suspect’s subsequent judicial confession, Imon had retained private photographs and video recordings of an intimate nature involving the two of them. Upon discovering her marital engagement, Imon initiated contact, demanded an in-person meeting, and threatened to publish the sensitive media on the internet. To neutralize the blackmail threat, the young woman coordinated with her fiancé Kamruzzaman, her uncle Tobarak Farajee, and another female associate to orchestrate Imon’s death.
The PBI’s documentation reveals that the plot operated as a geographical “death trap” extending across roughly two kilometres. The entire operation lasted approximately four and a half hours on 13 May 2021, the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Initial Preparation: Prior to the meeting, a knife and a soft drink contaminated with sedatives were procured at the Suryanagar intersection in Shibchar. Two female accomplices transported these items via a van to the designated meeting location.
The Meeting (15:50): Imon arrived at the Ilias Ahmed Chowdhury Degree College grounds to meet the two young women. During the interaction, he was offered and consumed the sedated beverage.
Transit to the Scene: As the sedatives took effect, Imon was placed into an auto-rickshaw and transported toward an old ferry ghat situated along the Arial Khan River.
The Fatal Assault: While seated on the riverbank, a dispute arose regarding the deletion of the photos and videos. The primary female suspect drew the concealed knife and inflicted two wounds to Imon’s neck. Kamruzzaman then took the weapon to deliver further fatal strikes.
Disposal: The perpetrators pushed the victim’s body into the river and left the area.
On the evening of 14 May 2021, the day after the murder, the police recovered Imon’s throat-slit body from the Arial Khan River in the Khaschar Bachamara area under the Sannyasirchar Union of Shibchar.
Although the initial inquiry was launched by the local Shibchar Thana Police, the case was subsequently transferred to the specialized Police Bureau of Investigation. By reconstructing the crime scene, tracking travel corridors, and identifying the individuals seen with the victim on Eid afternoon, the PBI successfully arrested the primary female suspect, who later rendered a formal confessional statement in court.
Reflecting on the structured nature of the operation, the Head of PBI and Additional Inspector General, Mostofa Kamal, stated that the incident was entirely distinct from an impulsive altercation or an emotionally driven act. He emphasized that the victim was intentionally lured to the site under false pretences and that every participant operated with distinct, assigned roles as part of a collective criminal design.
