Following a remarkable Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with the Rajasthan Royals, the franchise’s head coach, Kumar Sangakkara, has strongly endorsed opening batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi for an imminent call-up to the Indian national cricket team. Although the Royals were unable to secure a place in the final, the 15-year-old left-hander’s explosive boundary-hitting at the top of the order became one of the defining features of the tournament.
Suryavanshi finished the season with a notable aggregate of 776 runs accumulated over 16 innings. Operating with a strike rate of 237.30, the young opener displayed an overwhelming reliance on boundary hitting. Of his total runs, 684 were accumulated entirely from boundaries, consisting of 63 fours and a record-breaking 72 sixes—the highest number of maximums hit by an individual in a single IPL season.
His statistical summary for the campaign included one century and five half-centuries. However, his closing performances were also defined by a series of narrow dismissals; the teenage prodigy fell within the nineties in three of his final four innings, just missing out on converting those starts into centuries.
Suryavanshi’s high-impact batting was fully on display during the playoff stages. In the Eliminator, he smashed 97 runs from a mere 29 deliveries. He carried this form into the subsequent knockout fixture, scoring 96 runs off 47 balls against the Gujarat Titans. During that particular innings, he registered his slowest half-century of the season off 31 balls, before accelerating dramatically to score 46 runs off his next 15 deliveries. His exceptional innings ended when he struck a routine catch to Prasidh Krishna at deep third man.
This individual effort ultimately went in vain as the Gujarat Titans successfully chased down the target, anchored by the batting of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The defeat brought an end to Rajasthan’s campaign, halting their ambitions of reaching their first final since 2022.
Despite the squad’s elimination, Kumar Sangakkara praised the tactical maturity and mental resilience demonstrated by the teenager against world-class bowling attacks. Responding to inquiries about the player’s international future, Sangakkara expressed absolute certainty regarding his readiness for the highest level.
“Given what Vaibhav has achieved against some of the finest bowlers in the world, I think he is ready for whatever challenge is thrown at him. I am certain he will get a call-up soon. He bats with a lot of maturity, and he has anchored our opening partnerships responsibly this season.”
Sangakkara also outlined the management’s careful approach to the young player’s development, highlighting the importance of keeping his mind uncluttered. He noted that Suryavanshi prepares meticulously by studying video footage of opposing bowlers and contributing meaningfully to team meetings. The coaching staff intends to safeguard his fearless approach, ensuring his mind remains clear of unnecessary complications.
