An eighteen-year-old Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination candidate died after drowning in a pond in Bagmara Upazila, Rajshahi. The accidental drowning occurred on Sunday afternoon, 31 May 2026, in Nokhopara village, located within the Jogipara Union. The deceased youth has been identified as Rabbani, the son of local resident Aminul Islam.
According to reports verified by local authorities and village sources, Rabbani and a group of his classmates decided to bathe in a pond situated near his family home to find relief from prevailing high summer temperatures. The group entered the water shortly before dusk.
During the swim, Rabbani moved into deep water unnoticed by his peers and failed to resurface. When his classmates realized he was missing, they initiated an immediate search, but the depth of the water hindered their efforts.
The emergency was subsequently reported to the Bhagnadi Police Investigation Centre. Sub-Inspector Tarik Bin Khalid led a police unit to the site, collaborating with residents to conduct a systematic search. The joint recovery operation continued after nightfall, eventually resulting in the retrieval of Rabbani’s body later that evening.
Rabbani was currently appearing for his formal SSC examinations as a registered student of Katila Sabuj Sangha High School. Mojnu Mohammad, the headmaster of the institution, verified Rabbani’s academic standing and offered a character assessment of the student:
“Rabbani was a highly disciplined, well-behaved, and exceptionally quiet young man. His untimely passing has brought profound sorrow to his family, his peers, and the entire residential community.”
Sub-Inspector Tarik Bin Khalid confirmed the timeline of the recovery and the subsequent legal steps taken by the investigation center.
