Tofail Ahmed, a prominent organiser of the 1969 mass uprising and the Liberation War, former minister, and senior leader of the Awami League, will have his first funeral prayer at Takwa Mosque in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area after Maghrib. The information was confirmed to our representative by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and political associates.
He died on Monday (1 June) at approximately 4:30 pm while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. He was 82 years old at the time of his death.
Following his death, his body was taken to Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi 12/A for ritual bathing (ghusl). The first janaza (funeral prayer) will be held there after Maghrib prayers.
A member of the Awami League central sub-committee and executive committee member of Bhola District Awami League, Hemayet Uddin, told Tell our representative that the burial arrangements would proceed after the funeral rites. He said the first janaza would take place after ghusl, and, if all arrangements proceed as planned, a second janaza would be held in Bhola on Tuesday, followed by burial.
Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, N M Nasir Uddin, also confirmed that the first janaza of Tofail Ahmed would be held at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi after Maghrib.
According to family sources, after the first janaza in Dhaka, the body will be placed in the mortuary of Square Hospital overnight.
On Tuesday morning, the body will be transported by helicopter to Bhola. A second janaza will be held after Zuhr prayers at Bhola Government High School ground. The burial will then take place at his ancestral home, beside his parents’ graves.
Tofail Ahmed had been suffering from long-term paralysis and other health complications. He was admitted to Square Hospital in a critical condition on 28 September and had been placed on life support since then.
