Financial institutions across Asia are facing a significant challenge: translating widespread consumer anxiety intoc oncrete retirement planning. Despite a heightening awareness of longevity risks and the rising cost of living, a substantial proportion of the population in major hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore remains under-prepared for their post-career years.
Data from a comprehensive study conducted by FWD Life Insurance Company (Bermuda) Ltd. reveals a stark lack of confidence regarding long-term financial security. The survey, which polled over 1,000 participants in Hong Kong and Macau, indicates that 64% of individuals describe themselves as feeling stressed, worried, or merely “getting by” in financial terms.
The primary drivers of this unease over the next five to ten years include:
The escalating cost of daily living.
The increasing burden of healthcare expenses.
Significant deficiencies in retirement savings.
Ken Lau, the Hong Kong Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director for Greater China at FWD, noted that Hong Kong has maintained its status as the world’s longest-living region for ten consecutive years. While public health awareness has improved, the extension of life expectancy has inadvertently created a “longevity risk”—the statistical probability of an individual outliving their accumulated financial assets.
The disconnect between expectations and reality is particularly visible in the projected duration of savings. On average, respondents in Hong Kong estimated a requirement of approximately $817,000 (HK$6.4 million) to sustain their retirement. However, there is a distinct mathematical mismatch in their projections; most participants expected these funds to be exhausted by the age of 82. Given that the average life expectancy in the region is approximately 86 years, a critical four-year funding gap exists for the average retiree.
This trend is also mirrored in Singapore. A study by CIMB Bank Berhad found that while 78% of residents believe financial independence is an attainable goal, 34.6% remain deeply concerned about their personal financial futures. High living costs and the pressure of family responsibilities were cited as the most significant barriers to saving. Sharon Ng, Deputy Dean at Nanyang Business School, observed that for Singaporeans, financial independence is increasingly viewed as the freedom from stress rather than a specific net worth.
The gap between awareness and execution is most pronounced among younger demographics. Generation Z respondents in Hong Kong expressed a desire to retire earlier than previous generations and projected the highest requirements for retirement capital. Nevertheless, only 16% of this cohort reported taking active, tangible steps to secure their financial objectives.
General engagement with professional financial services also remains low across all age groups:
43% of respondents have never consulted a professional financial adviser.
30% do not make regular contributions to any form of retirement or pension fund.
Kelvin Yu, Chief Proposition and Healthcare Officer at FWD Hong Kong & Macau, highlighted that the complexity of modern medical care adds another layer of difficulty. As treatments become more advanced and personalised, they also become more expensive, necessitating more robust and flexible financial planning.
The data suggests that the hurdle for insurers is not necessarily a lack of suitable products, but rather a gap in communication and distribution. For example, 64% of those in the “sandwich generation”—individuals responsible for both ageing parents and their own children—were unaware of the existence of multi-generational insurance products. This indicates that insurers must shift their strategy from simply raising awareness of the problem to providing clear, actionable pathways that address the specific needs of diverse family structures.
