The body of a 30-year-old man, who was killed after being struck by an unidentified vehicle, has been recovered by law enforcement authorities in the Sundarganj Upazila of the Gaibandha District. The deceased, identified as Rubel Mia, was a resident of the Sonarpara locality situated within the Ulipur Upazila of the Kurigram District. He was the son of the late Monnaf Sonar.
The recovery operation was executed on Monday, 1 June 2026, from the interior of a commercial passenger bus belonging to Asim Paribahan. At the time of the police recovery, the bus was parked on the grounds of the Imamganj Fazil Degree Madrasah, located within the Tarapur Union of Sundarganj Upazila.
According to formal statements provided by police investigators, Rubel Mia was employed as a transport worker. In the period leading up to the incident, he was working as a staff member on a commercial coach that had been chartered to transport passengers from the capital city, Dhaka, back to their ancestral homes in the northern region for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha religious festival.
During the late-night hours of Sunday, 31 May 2026, Rubel Mia was walking on the primary roadway situated directly in front of the Tarapur Union Parishad complex. Whilst on the thoroughfare, he was struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle. The impact of the collision inflicted severe trauma upon the pedestrian, resulting in his immediate death at the scene of the accident. The driver of the offending vehicle fled the scene immediately without stopping or alerting emergency responders.
Following the fatal collision, Rubel Mia’s colleagues from the transport sector arrived at the site of the hit-and-run and positively identified his body. Rather than immediately notifying local law enforcement or medical authorities regarding the fatality, the transport workers decided to transport the body away from the public road.
They carried Rubel Mia’s body onto an Asim Paribahan passenger bus that had been stationed at the nearby Imamganj Fazil Degree Madrasah playground. Once inside the vehicle, his colleagues covered the body with pieces of cloth and left it concealed within the passenger cabin overnight.
On Monday morning, information regarding the presence of a shrouded human corpse inside the parked bus began to circulate widely among residents living adjacent to the madrasah. The revelation caused considerable agitation and panic within the local community, leading to a substantial crowd of curious onlookers assembling around the school grounds and the vehicle.
Upon receiving formal notification from alarmed citizens regarding the situation at the madrasah, a detachment from the Sundarganj Police Station was dispatched to the location. Police officers secured the perimeter, documented the crime scene, and recovered the body from the bus before transferring it to the police station for official processing.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sundarganj Police Station, Shahin Mohammad Amanullah, officially confirmed the details of the recovery operation and the underlying cause of death. He stated that the young man had died exclusively from injuries sustained during the road traffic accident. The police administration subsequently dispatched the remains to the morgue at the Gaibandha General Hospital to undergo a formal post-mortem examination.
OC Shahin Mohammad Amanullah further clarified that all mandatory legal procedures are being actively pursued by investigators. A criminal case will be formally registered under the provisions of the Road Transport Act against the unidentified driver, after which the body will be formally handed over to the surviving family members in Kurigram for burial ceremonies.
