A tragic boating accident in the Purvadhala Upazila of Netrokona has resulted in the deaths of an aunt and her niece who were visiting relatives for the Eid holidays. Another young girl sustained injuries during the incident and remains hospitalised for medical treatment.
The fatal accident occurred on Monday at approximately 4:30 pm in the Chikni Beel wetland, located in Bishambharpur village within the Bishkakuni Union.
According to local residents and police officials, Md. Hossain Miah, a resident of Kolahari village in the Tarakanda Upazila of Mymensingh, arrived at his father-in-law’s residence in Bishambharpur village on Sunday evening to celebrate the Eid festival. He was accompanied by several relatives, including his elder sister, Jamila Khatun, and Nusrat Akhter, the daughter of his other sister, Nurjahan.
On Monday afternoon, a group of six individuals embarked on a recreational trip across the nearby Chikni Beel using a small, wooden dinghy. Authorities stated that the vessel became severely overloaded, causing it to lose stability and capsize in the middle of the waterbody.
While three of the passengers managed to swim safely back to the shore, Jamila Khatun, Nusrat Akhter, and a local girl named Mim Akhter were unable to do so and began to submerge. Local residents launched an immediate rescue operation and managed to pull the three victims from the water. They were rushed to the Purvadhala Upazila Health Complex on Monday evening, where the attending physician pronounced Jamila and Nusrat dead upon arrival.
The identities and current statuses of the individuals involved in the boat capsize are detailed in the table below:
| Name | Age | Relationship / Identity | Residence | Status |
| Jamila Khatun | 30 | Wife of Mansur Ali; elder sister of Md. Hossain Miah and aunt of Nusrat Akhter. | Kolahari village, Tarakanda Upazila, Mymensingh | Pronounced dead at the hospital. |

Sajal Kumar Sarkar, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) for Netrokona district, confirmed the details of the incident. He stated that preliminary investigations indicate the primary cause of the capsizing was the excessive number of passengers boarding the small wooden dinghy.
The police department has initiated formal procedures, and necessary legal actions regarding the accidental deaths are currently underway.
