Two young children have tragically lost their lives after drowning in a ditch in the Sreebardi Upazila of Sherpur district. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Purba Bade Ghonapara village, located within the Goshaupur Union of the upazila.
The victims have been identified as nine-year-old Hanzala, the son of Alamgir Hossain, and six-year-old Siddique Mia, the son of Nekabor Ali. Both families are permanent residents of the same village.
According to local residents and the police, the two children were playing on a makeshift raft crafted from banana tree trunks in a water-filled ditch situated close to their homes. It is suspected that during their play, they inadvertently fell off the raft and plunged into the deep water.
When the children failed to return home after a prolonged period, their family members grew anxious and initiated a search in the surrounding areas. After a frantic search operation, the bodies of the two minors were discovered in the ditch and subsequently recovered with the assistance of local villagers.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreebardi Police Station, Mohammad Nurul Alam, officially confirmed the veracity of the incident to the media. He stated that law enforcement authorities responded swiftly upon receiving the report. Following the completion of the necessary legal and administrative formalities, the bodies of the two children were handed over to their respective families on Monday afternoon.
The local police department has registered an unnatural death (UD) case regarding this tragic incident. Officials have urged local guardians to remain vigilant concerning the whereabouts of young children, particularly when they are near unsupervised open water bodies, ditches, or ponds, in order to prevent such fatal accidents.
