A family’s journey home with the body of a deceased relative ended in a devastating road accident in Narail on Wednesday morning, leaving two people dead and at least five others injured.
The collision occurred on the Dhaka–Benapole Highway in the Baliyadanga area of Narail Sadar Upazila while family members were transporting the body of Ismail Hossain to his home district of Jashore after he died in Dhaka.
According to police, Ismail Hossain, the father of police Sub-Inspector Abu Taher, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday at Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital in Dhaka. Following his death, relatives arranged for an ambulance to carry his body to the family’s residence in Jashore for burial.
While travelling through Baliyadanga, the ambulance reportedly collided head-on with a local passenger bus approaching from the opposite direction. The impact caused severe damage to the ambulance and resulted in multiple casualties.
Among those killed was 52-year-old Jahanara Begum, the wife of the deceased Ismail Hossain. She died at the scene of the crash. The ambulance driver, 27-year-old Akbar Ali, a resident of Lakshmipur, sustained critical injuries and later died while being taken to hospital.
At least five other passengers travelling in the ambulance were injured in the accident. Emergency responders and local residents assisted in rescuing the victims before they were transported to Narail District Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment. Hospital authorities said the injured were receiving medical care, although the extent of their injuries was not immediately disclosed.

Road crashes involving ambulances and passenger vehicles remain a recurring concern on Bangladesh’s highways, particularly on busy inter-district routes where heavy traffic, overtaking manoeuvres and high travel speeds can increase accident risks. Such incidents often have particularly tragic consequences because ambulances frequently carry patients, grieving relatives or, as in this case, the remains of deceased family members.
Officer-in-Charge Ajay Kumar Kundu of Narail Sadar Police Station said the bodies of Jahanara Begum and Ismail Hossain had been kept at Narail District Hospital. He added that the authorities had initiated the necessary legal procedures and that further investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The accident transformed what was intended to be a final journey of mourning into a second tragedy for the bereaved family, compounding their loss within a matter of hours.
