Delhi Hotel Blaze Claims 21 Lives

A devastating fire at a hotel in south Delhi has left at least 21 people dead and more than 40 others injured, in one of the capital’s deadliest hotel fire incidents in recent years. The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday morning in Malviya Nagar, when a blaze erupted in a basement restaurant and rapidly engulfed two adjoining hospitality establishments.

According to initial reports, the fire broke out at approximately 8:50 a.m. in the basement restaurant of the five-storey Flourish Stay hotel. Within minutes, flames spread to the neighbouring Mikasa Inn, trapping guests inside the buildings. Many of those staying at the hotel were reportedly asleep when the fire started, leaving little time for evacuation.

The hotels were known to accommodate people visiting Delhi for medical treatment, largely because of their proximity to the renowned Max Super Speciality Hospital in south Delhi. Several foreign nationals were also reportedly staying at the premises. Authorities estimate that around 40 guests were present in the hotel at the time of the incident.

Kesar Singh, a chef working in the hotel restaurant, said he had attempted to switch on an electric stove shortly before the fire erupted. According to his account, flames suddenly spread throughout the area. He managed to escape and later witnessed the building being consumed by fire.

Emergency services responded swiftly after receiving distress calls. Multiple fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and rescue teams worked for hours to evacuate trapped occupants and bring the blaze under control. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show desperate guests jumping from the burning structure in an attempt to save their lives.

The narrow lanes of Hauz Rani, where the hotel is located, reportedly complicated rescue efforts and access for emergency vehicles. Nevertheless, firefighters, police officers and disaster response personnel succeeded in rescuing a significant number of occupants.

Incident Overview

Item Details
Location Malviya Nagar, South Delhi
Date 3 June
Time of Fire Approximately 8:50 a.m.
Buildings Involved Flourish Stay and Mikasa Inn
Confirmed Deaths At least 21
Injured/Rescued More than 40
Suspected Origin Basement restaurant
Ongoing Inquiry Fire safety compliance and licensing violations

Following the tragedy, Delhi authorities reportedly uncovered evidence of multiple regulatory violations. Government sources indicated that the establishment had been licensed to operate only six rooms. However, investigators found that as many as 25 rooms, including those in the basement area, were being used for accommodation.

Officials are also examining whether the hotel possessed a valid fire safety clearance. Preliminary findings suggest that the entire property relied on a single access and exit route, a factor that may have severely hindered evacuation efforts during the emergency. Investigators are expected to scrutinise building permissions, occupancy limits, emergency exits and compliance with fire prevention regulations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the loss of life and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He announced ex gratia compensation of ₹200,000 for the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for those injured.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the incident as “heart-rending” and praised the rapid response of emergency services, noting that many lives were saved through timely rescue operations. She stated that the Delhi government was closely monitoring the treatment of the injured and ensuring that all necessary medical assistance was being provided.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire and the apparent breaches of safety regulations. The findings are expected to intensify scrutiny of fire safety standards in hotels and guest accommodations across the Indian capital.
