The late Shafi Ahmed remains recognized as one of the most prominent, courageous student leaders of the 1990 anti-authoritarian mass movement in Bangladesh. His career was inextricably linked with street demonstrations, struggles for democratic restoration, and progressive political movements. Throughout the turbulent period of resistance against military autocracy, he maintained widespread acceptability across the All-Party Student Action Committee (Sarbodalya Chhatra Sangram Parishad), with many contemporaries regarding him as a core organizer of the movement due to his critical role in designing strategy, execution, and frontline leadership.
In a poignant historic moment during the anti-autocracy movement, Shafi Ahmed was walking hand-in-hand within the procession alongside fellow activist Shahid Dr. Raufun Basunia when Basunia was shot and killed. This event remains recorded as a significant and tragic testament in the history of Bangladeshi student politics.
Shafi Ahmed was born on 8 October 1961 in the Muktarpara area of Netrokona district, located within the greater Mymensingh region. He was the son of the late Advocate ATM Azizul Huq, growing up in a large family alongside one brother and six sisters. His early childhood and adolescence were shaped by the sociocultural environment of Netrokona.
He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Netrokona Anjuman Adarsha Government High School and his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from Netrokona Government College. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Dhaka, where he successfully obtained both his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM) degrees.
His journey into public organization began during his youth through the local children’s cultural organization, Netrokona Madhumachhi Kochi-Kachar Mela. This early involvement laid the foundation for his organizational acumen and leadership skills, which later transitioned into active national student politics.
As a top-tier leader within the contemporary All-Party Student Alliance, Shafi Ahmed served as the General Secretary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) student wing, Chhatra League. His organizational vision and widespread cross-party acceptability eventually elevated him from student representation into a notable figure within mainstream national politics.
Beyond the anti-autocracy movement, Ahmed was actively involved from the outset with the Jonotar Adalat (People’s Court), an initiative formed in 1992 under the leadership of Shahid Jononi Jahanara Imam to demand the trial of war criminals. Throughout his public life, he remained a vocal advocate for the preservation of the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War, non-communal state values, and democratic structures.
