The lifeless body of an engineering student, who went missing while bathing in the Brahmaputra River with his companions, has been recovered by emergency services in the Gouripur Upazila of Mymensingh district. On the morning of Thursday, 4 June 2026, a specialized diving team from the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence retrieved the remains of the individual following an extensive search and rescue operation that spanned two consecutive days. The deceased has been formally identified by local authorities and family members as Mohammad Mokramin Hasan Rafi, aged 25, a resident of the Boyra area situated within the local jurisdiction.
According to official briefings provided by the local police and members of the grieving family, the fatal incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, 3 June 2026. At approximately 3:00 pm, Mohammad Mokramin Hasan Rafi, who was a third-year academic student at the Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute, accompanied three of his close friends to the Brahmaputra River to bathe. During the course of their activity, the group of young men ventured further into the body of water, eventually swimming out into the deep and technically hazardous sections of the river channel.
As they navigated the deeper waters, the swimmers encountered strong river currents. While two of his companions successfully managed to swim against the moving water and safely reach the riverbank, Rafi found himself trapped by the sheer velocity of the undercurrents. Despite knowing how to swim and making repeated physical efforts to return to the shore, he was ultimately overwhelmed by the moving water and submerged beneath the surface of the river.
Upon receiving urgent notifications regarding the missing student, a specialized diving unit from the Fire Service and Civil Defence department was immediately dispatched to the precise geographical location. The rescue personnel initiated an emergency underwater search operation, which continued systematically until nightfall on Wednesday evening. Due to fading light and challenging river conditions, the initial search concluded at dusk without locating any sign of the missing youth.
The search and rescue operation was systematically reactivated by the emergency services at first light on Thursday morning. At approximately 8:30 am on 4 June 2026, the diving team successfully located and retrieved the body of the deceased student from the water. The recovery took place in the immediate vicinity of the Boyra Ghat area, which is situated directly adjacent to the local Boyra Bazar market within the upazila.
Following the formal recovery of the body, the emergency services transferred the individual to the custody of the local law enforcement authorities for the processing of mandatory legal administrative requirements. Mohammad Habibur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Gouripur Police Station, officially confirmed the timing and successful execution of the morning recovery operation by the emergency response diving personnel.
The police administration noted that the immediate family members of the deceased student, including his father, Abul絕 Hossein, have not submitted any formal complaints or allegations of foul play to the authorities regarding the underlying circumstances of the drowning. Consequently, the Gouripur Police Station management has initiated the formal procedural process to file an Unnatural Death (UD) case concerning the tragic accident, which remains the standard administrative protocol under national legal regulations. The family has also indicated that the final religious funeral rites and burial will proceed in their local ancestral graveyard following the completion of the necessary administrative formalities.
