Concerns regarding the physical fitness of Brazilian forward Neymar continue to intensify as the opening match of the upcoming World Cup approaches. The national team is scheduled to face Morocco on 13 June, but the talismanic attacker’s participation remains highly uncertain due to a grade-2 calf muscle injury sustained in his left leg.

To precisely evaluate the progression of the injury, Neymar is scheduled to undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan on Monday, 8 June, in New Jersey, United States. The results of this medical assessment will determine his immediate rehabilitation pathway. Owing to this physical setback, the forward has already been ruled out of Brazil’s upcoming warm-up fixture against Egypt, alongside his expected absence from early tournament proceedings.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti addressed the media regarding the situation, clarifying that the player’s exact medical status is not yet fully definitive. However, the manager offered a measured note of optimism, stating that Neymar is currently undertaking individual training sessions. Ancelotti indicated that if the player’s recovery progresses favourably, he could potentially reintegrate into full squad training sessions by next week.

Nineteen days have now elapsed since the initial occurrence of the calf injury. Despite the cautious optimism expressed by the management, sporting analysts and medical assessments suggest that it remains highly improbable for Neymar to feature in the opening fixture against Morocco. At present, the player is barred from intensive physical exertion, restricting his regime to rehabilitation sessions in the gym and limited, low-intensity light training on the pitch.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) issued an official statement confirming that Neymar’s recovery programme is being managed progressively and meticulously. The primary objective of the medical staff is to systematically restore his match fitness, ensuring he becomes available for selection at some stage during the progression of the tournament.

This tournament marks Neymar’s fourth consecutive appearance at a World Cup. Having previously represented Brazil in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions, he remains the focal point of the nation’s attacking lineup.
