Seven More Children Die of Measles-Like Symptoms

A total of seven children have died from measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh within the last 24 hours. According to the official measles report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday, a combined total of 1,287 new cases involving both confirmed measles and related symptoms were recorded between 8:00 am on Saturday and 8:00 am on Sunday, indicating a persistent outbreak within the country’s paediatric population.

The DGHS statistical bulletin reveals that out of the 1,287 cases recorded within the 24-hour window, 1,221 children exhibited preliminary measles-like symptoms. The remaining 66 children were formally diagnosed with laboratory-confirmed measles infections.

Geographically, the capital city of Dhaka recorded the highest number of fatalities within the 24-hour reporting period. The regional distribution of the seven fatalities is classified as follows:

• Dhaka: 4 deaths

• Chittagong: 1 death

• Mymensingh: 1 death

• Khulna: 1 death

Cumulative Epidemiological Data Since 15 March

The historical data compiled by health authorities since 15 March paints a broader picture of the epidemic’s progression. Over this period, a cumulative total of 79,012 children nationwide have developed symptoms indicative of measles. Due to the severity of these symptoms, 64,263 children required formal admission into various healthcare facilities for clinical management. Medical interventions have successfully resolved a vast majority of these cases, with 60,084 children fully recovering and being discharged from hospitals to return home.

However, the mortality figures recorded since mid-March remain substantial. A total of 529 children succumbed directly to severe measles-like symptoms prior to formal laboratory confirmation. Additionally, 91 children died after their laboratory tests explicitly confirmed a measles infection. Consequently, the total cumulative death toll from measles and its associated symptoms since 15 March has reached 620 children.
