The Habiganj 55 Battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has significantly tightened security measures along the district’s international border to counteract an increasing trend of forced illegal infiltration—commonly referred to as “push-ins”—from India through various frontier routes. Operational security, continuous 24-hour patrols, and intelligence surveillance have been escalated across the district’s approximately 103-kilometre border stretch. Furthermore, the border security agency has initiated public announcements via loudspeakers and community courtyard meetings to engage local residents. The BGB confirmed on Sunday that no infiltration incidents had occurred through the Habiganj border areas up to the present day.
To mitigate the risk of cross-border infiltration, the BGB has deployed a series of preventative awareness campaigns. Late on Saturday night, the 55 Battalion conducted late-night loudspeaker announcements across various border villages to alert local communities. Concurrently, regular courtyard meetings are being organised during daylight hours. These interactive sessions aim to educate the local population regarding the distinct risks associated with illegal push-ins, the identification of suspicious individuals, and the necessity of reporting any unusual border activity to the security forces immediately.
This public awareness strategy actively incorporates local residents alongside members of the Village Police (Gram Police) and the Ansar-VDP (Village Defence Party). Residents living within the frontier zones have expressed satisfaction with these protective measures. Mohammad Majnu Miah, a van driver from the Guibil border area within the Chunarughat Upazila, remarked that the late-night loudspeaker alerts have heightened community vigilance, adding that the regular presence of BGB patrols makes the community feel secure.
Similarly, Mohan Lal, a tea garden worker from the Teliapara area in the Madhabpur Upazila, stated that the BGB used the courtyard meetings to explain the mechanics and implications of illegal push-ins clearly. This training has enabled ordinary citizens to identify unfamiliar or suspicious individuals and provide timely, accurate data to the authorities.
According to BGB officials, these awareness-raising assemblies, public announcements, and distributed informational campaigns will remain a permanent fixture in the border areas. Supported by the vigilance of the local populace, the paramilitary force maintains a 24-hour readiness posture to identify and instantly neutralise any suspicious movements.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tanzilur Rahman, the Commanding Officer of the Habiganj BGB 55 Battalion, clarified the strict nature of the current operations. He stated that a state of maximum alert has been declared across all frontier zones in response to current geopolitical developments. Patrol frequencies have been reinforced at every Border Observation Post (BOP), alongside an escalation in internal intelligence gathering. By integrating the local civilian population, every single segment of the border has been brought under comprehensive oversight.
To guarantee nocturnal security, the battalion has deployed advanced technological assets, utilising thermal and infrared-equipped drones to maintain continuous aerial surveillance during the night. Lieutenant Colonel Rahman reiterated that no concessions would be made regarding the protection of the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The tables below provide a structured overview of the security parameters and community-engagement frameworks established by the BGB 55 Battalion along the Habiganj frontier:
