A man named Rajib has died following an alleged mob beating after accusations of burglary in Singair upazila of Manikganj district, an incident that has triggered widespread concern and prompted a police investigation.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday in the Baindail (Jianagar) area under Saista Union. The deceased, believed to be around 39 years old, was identified as Rajib, son of Fulbar, a resident of Dattakhond village in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka district.
Residents reported that late on Sunday night, a group of four to five individuals allegedly entered the residence of Mohammad Hakim Ali in Jianagar village. The intruders are said to have broken into the house by cutting the window grille of a tin-shed structure before beginning to search and remove valuables.
Eyewitness accounts claim that Rajib was inside the house during the incident and was allegedly involved in collecting cash and jewellery, which were then handed to accomplices positioned outside the premises. When the homeowner realised what was happening and attempted to intervene, a physical confrontation reportedly ensued between him and Rajib. Hakim Ali sustained injuries during the altercation and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents.
As locals rushed to the scene, one of the alleged intruders—identified as Rajib—was apprehended. He was subsequently subjected to a mob beating, which left him critically injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Hakim Ali was later rescued and transferred to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for advanced treatment.
Authorities have confirmed that while allegations of burglary have been made, a full investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and establish responsibility. Police have also reiterated that taking the law into one’s own hands is a punishable offence.
Hakim Ali’s elder brother, Hukum Ali, claimed that approximately BDT 400,000 in cash and around four bhori of gold jewellery were taken during the incident. He also stated that one of the alleged intruders had been detained before the situation escalated into fatal violence.
The Officer-in-Charge of Singair Police Station confirmed that the body has been sent to Manikganj Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Legal proceedings are in progress, and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend others involved.
