Violence Erupts on Dhaka–Chattogram Highway

A police vehicle was vandalised and a highway patrol team came under attack following an operation to seize illegal three-wheeled vehicles on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Cumilla’s Burichong upazila, sparking brief disruption to traffic and heightened tensions in the area.

The incident occurred at around 11:00 am on Tuesday in the Nimsar vegetable market area, a busy commercial stretch along the highway. According to police and local sources, the situation escalated after a team from the Moinamoti Highway Police attempted to remove and impound several unauthorised three-wheelers operating on the busy route in violation of traffic regulations.

The enforcement action provoked anger among a section of three-wheeler drivers and associates, who quickly gathered in groups. The confrontation soon turned violent when the agitated crowd allegedly launched a coordinated attack on the police personnel. Officers were pelted with bricks, and a police vehicle was severely damaged after being struck repeatedly during the assault.

The Officer-in-Charge of Moinamoti Highway Crossing Police Station, Md. Abdul Momin, confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the patrol team had been acting to restore discipline on the highway when they were suddenly attacked by an organised group of around 30 to 35 individuals. He further noted that the attackers not only assaulted the officers but also vandalised the official vehicle, causing significant damage.

Following the incident, additional police units were deployed to the scene. Law enforcement officers managed to bring the situation under control after a brief period of chaos. Normal traffic movement on the highway was later restored, though the incident caused temporary disruption and panic among commuters and local traders in the Nimsar market area.

Authorities have stated that efforts are underway to identify those involved in the attack. Legal proceedings will be initiated once suspects are confirmed through evidence and investigation.
