A tragic incident in Monirampur upazila of Jessore district has left a 45-year-old man dead after he was allegedly hacked to death for protesting against the harassment of his granddaughter. The victim, Inamul Hossain, a local mason from Jhikargacha upazila, was attacked on Monday night while returning home from a nearby market.
According to family members, the conflict began when a young man named Rabi (23) allegedly made inappropriate advances towards Inamul’s teenage granddaughter, a ninth-grade student who was staying with her mother at her maternal home in Monirampur. The matter was reportedly brought to the attention of local representatives, including a Union Parishad member, after which tensions escalated between the two sides.
Relatives said Rabi became enraged after being confronted and warned, leading to a series of confrontations. The situation deteriorated further when an altercation broke out between Rabi and members of the girl’s family. In the aftermath, Rabi is alleged to have threatened to kill Inamul Hossain.
On Monday night at around 9:00 pm, Inamul was returning home from the local market when he was ambushed. Family members allege that Rabi, along with several associates, attacked him with sharp weapons, inflicting severe injuries. Locals quickly rescued him and rushed him first to Monirampur Upazila Health Complex. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later transferred to Jessore General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Reshma Khatun, filed a murder case naming 11 individuals. Police have already arrested one suspect, while operations are ongoing to detain the remaining accused.
Authorities have confirmed that the attack is being treated as a targeted killing linked to the earlier harassment complaint. The case has sparked concern in the local community, with residents calling for swift justice and stronger action against those involved in violent retaliation.
