The body of a missing auto-rickshaw driver has been recovered by law enforcement authorities in the Muksudpur Upazila of Gopalganj district five days after his initial disappearance. In connection with the recovery of the body and the subsequent investigation into the death, the local police department has formally arrested two individuals suspected of direct involvement in the killing.
The deceased driver has been identified as Shahidul, the son of the late Abdul Salam Matubbor, a resident of Kamalapur village located within the jurisdiction of Muksudpur Upazila. The successful location of the body marks a significant development in a case that began as a routine missing persons investigation, which has since transitioned into a formal murder case involving vehicle theft.
According to statements provided by the brother of the deceased, Shahidul Matubbor, the auto-rickshaw driver departed from his family residence on Saturday morning with the primary intention of operating his commercial vehicle for the day. However, he failed to return home after his shift concluded that evening.
As a result of his prolonged and unexplained absence, the family took administrative action the following day, registering a formal General Diary (GD) entry regarding the missing individual at the Muksudpur Police Station on 7 June. The family subsequently conducted their own inquiries within the local community before gathering information linking specific individuals to Shahidul’s final known movements.
Shahidul Matubbor later recounted the details leading up to the discovery of the crime, stating:
“Last Saturday morning, my brother left home with the purpose of driving his auto-rickshaw and never returned. The following day, on 7 June, a General Diary was lodged at the Muksudpur Police Station. Later, we received information that Nur Hossain and Palash had taken my brother away. They hijacked my brother’s auto-rickshaw and killed him.”
Following information obtained during the ongoing investigation, officers from the Muksudpur Police Station targeted and successfully arrested two suspects originating from the same village as the victim. The apprehended individuals have been identified as Nur Hossain, the son of Abu Sheikh, and Palash Sheikh, the son of Kashem Sheikh, both residents of Kamalapur village.
During the subsequent interrogation process conducted whilst in state custody, the two detained suspects provided specific details regarding the location of the driver’s remains. Acting strictly upon the geographical indicators and statements volunteered by the suspects, a police team deployed to a neighbouring district to retrieve the deceased on Wednesday afternoon.
The operational unit located the body concealed inside a cluster of roadside bushes in the Panthapara area, which falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the adjacent Rajoir Upazila. Officers secured the crime scene and completed the initial documentation required for the recovery process.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Muksudpur Police Station, Abdullah Al Mamun, officially confirmed the successful recovery of the body and the status of the two suspects. He stated that immediately following the retrieval from Rajoir Upazila, the body was transported to a hospital morgue to undergo a mandatory post-mortem examination to establish the precise medical cause of death.
The police administration has integrated the statements of the family and the findings from the retrieval site into the formal case file. The two arrested suspects remain in custody, and the legal framework to file statutory murder charges and carjacking offences against them under the prevailing penal code is currently being processed by the judicial authorities.
