Two Killed in Road Collision in Kishoreganj

Two people have been killed and three others injured following a tragic collision between a truck and an auto-rickshaw in Pakundia under Kishoreganj early on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on 11 June in front of the Shrirmadi BADC Potato Storage facility. According to police and local witnesses, a goods-laden truck travelling from Dhaka towards Kishoreganj struck a battery-powered auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction. The impact was severe, leaving the small vehicle badly mangled.

Two passengers died instantly at the scene, while three others sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders and local residents quickly rushed the injured victims to Kishoreganj 250-bed General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Badal Mia (45), son of Rustam Ali from Chandipasha village in Pakundia, and Isam Uddin (50), son of Shamsuddin from Dapunia village in Hossainpur upazila. Police said all the passengers in the auto-rickshaw were travelling together early in the morning to collect insect eggs used as fishing bait.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that the truck involved in the collision has been seized, along with the damaged auto-rickshaw. However, the driver of the truck fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large. Authorities have launched efforts to locate and apprehend him.

A case is expected to be filed in connection with the crash, and investigators are examining whether excessive speed, reckless driving, or reduced visibility in the early morning hours contributed to the accident.

Road accidents involving slow-moving vehicles such as battery-operated auto-rickshaws have become increasingly common on rural and semi-urban roads in Bangladesh, often due to mixed traffic conditions and inadequate road safety enforcement.
