Two Killed in Feni Highway Collision

A late-night road accident involving a gas-laden truck and a covered van on a highway in Feni has left two people dead and at least eight others injured, according to police, hospital authorities and local witnesses.

The collision occurred at around 2:00 am on Wednesday night in the Khaiyara area near the Bhojon Bari Restaurant under Feni Sadar Upazila. The incident took place when a covered van travelling towards Dhaka crashed into the rear of a stationary truck carrying gas cylinders, resulting in significant casualties among people gathered near the vehicle.

Authorities said the gas truck had been parked beside the highway after suffering a punctured tyre. The driver and his assistant were reportedly replacing the damaged wheel when several local residents and passers-by stopped nearby to observe the repair work.

According to preliminary findings, the Dhaka-bound covered van suddenly lost control and ploughed into both the truck and the group of people standing around it. The force of the impact caused severe injuries to multiple individuals and triggered an immediate emergency response.

Casualties and Injuries

One of the deceased has been identified as Jahangir, 40. The identity of the second victim had not been confirmed at the time of reporting. Hospital officials stated that one victim died before reaching medical care, while another succumbed to injuries during treatment.

The injured were rescued by local residents and officers from Mahipal Highway Police Station before being taken to Feni General Hospital. Several of the victims sustained serious injuries to their heads and limbs.

Among those transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment were Abdur Shukkur (52), Belal Hossain (37), Ariful Islam (32), Arif (20) and Md Rasel (32). Two other injured individuals, Md Mizan (35) from Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar and Sagar (22) from the Sonapur area of Noakhali, remained under treatment at Feni General Hospital. Another victim, Jewel (16), received primary medical care and was later discharged.

Eyewitness Account

Abul Kalam, a local businessman whose restaurant is located near the accident site, said he heard a loud noise and rushed outside. He observed that the truck had suffered a tyre puncture and was being repaired on the roadside. Several people had gathered nearby when the covered van approached from behind and lost control, striking the entire group.

He stated that one person appeared to die at the scene while several others suffered critical injuries.

Official Response

Dr Mosharraf Hossain Talukdar, the physician on duty at the emergency department of Feni General Hospital, confirmed that at least ten casualties were brought to the facility following the crash. Medical teams provided emergency treatment before referring the most seriously injured patients to Chattogram for specialised care.

Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam of Fazilpur Highway Police Station said law enforcement officers responded quickly after receiving reports of the collision. The damaged truck and covered van have been taken into police custody for investigation.

Police said efforts are continuing to establish the identity of the second deceased victim, with assistance from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). The bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue pending further legal procedures and identification. Authorities have also initiated the necessary legal process to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
