A small rural marketplace in Noakhali has become a striking display of football enthusiasm, with more than 300 flags decorating the area ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The scene can be witnessed at Teker Bazar in Char Kakra Union of Companiganj Upazila. Located approximately 25 kilometres from Maijdee, the district headquarters of Noakhali, the market is home to around 70 shops. Supporters of Brazil and Argentina have independently organised and financed the installation of hundreds of national flags, transforming the marketplace into a colourful attraction.
During a visit to the market on Wednesday afternoon, rows of Argentina’s sky-blue and white flags and Brazil’s yellow, blue and green flags could be seen suspended from ropes stretching across the marketplace. The flags have also been placed in front of shops, on electricity poles, in tree branches and on the roofs of buildings. The display is so extensive that it is visible from nearly one kilometre away.
The vibrant decorations have attracted considerable attention from shoppers, pedestrians and visitors travelling from neighbouring areas. Many people stop to admire the display, while others take photographs and record videos on their mobile phones.
According to local residents, football fever takes on a special character in Teker Bazar whenever a World Cup approaches. However, they say this year’s preparations are larger than in previous editions. Local youths and business owners have collectively funded the installation of more than 300 flags throughout the market. Their stated aim is to share the excitement of the tournament with the wider community.
The scale of the decoration can be summarised as follows:
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Teker Bazar, Char Kakra Union, Companiganj Upazila, Noakhali |
| Distance from Maijdee | Approximately 25 kilometres |
| Number of shops | Around 70 |
| Flags displayed | More than 300 |
| Supporting teams | Argentina and Brazil |
| Visibility of display | Nearly 1 kilometre away |
Among those enjoying the preparations is local resident Rabiul Hossain, an Argentina supporter. Speaking at the market, he said that the World Cup is the biggest festival for football enthusiasts and that displaying the flag of a favourite team is a way of expressing that excitement. He added that staying awake late to watch matches never feels tiring during the tournament.
Businessman Alomgir Hossain noted that both Argentina and Brazil enjoy strong support in the area. He explained that a friendly and unspoken competition has emerged between supporters of the two nations over the number of flags displayed. However, he emphasised that the activity is purely for enjoyment and has never led to disputes within the community.
Retired teacher Samsul Haque echoed that sentiment. He observed that while Argentina and Brazil are fierce rivals on the football pitch, supporters of both teams in the market celebrate together. In his view, the rows of flags flying side by side symbolise harmony and coexistence. He expressed the hope that the excitement surrounding the tournament would remain focused on enjoyment and entertainment rather than rivalry.
The extensive flag display has turned Teker Bazar into an unusual local attraction, reflecting the enduring popularity of international football and the strong emotional connection many Bangladeshi supporters feel towards the sport’s biggest global competition.
