Five people, including a child, have suffered burn injuries following an explosion caused by a gas leak at a residential house in Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila. The incident occurred on Thursday morning in the Chanpur area of Madanpur. All injured individuals have been admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute for treatment.
According to the details provided, the victims include members of the same family along with one additional individual. The injured persons are Mannan (50), Sultana (35), Siam (19), Mimu (13), and Hazrat Ali (8), all residents of the Chanpur area under Bandar upazila.
Police stated that the explosion occurred after gas accumulated inside the house due to a leak from a cylinder. Bandar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Golam Mostafa Ashraf Uddin, said that gas had been leaking from a cylinder inside the house and gradually filled the room. When a stove was ignited in the morning, the accumulated gas came into contact with fire, triggering a sudden explosion. Local residents immediately rescued the injured and transported them to hospital.
Medical officials at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute confirmed the severity of the injuries. Residential doctor of the emergency department, Shaon bin Rahman, reported that Sultana has burns covering approximately 90 per cent of her body, Siam 77 per cent, Mimu 41 per cent, Mannan 30 per cent, and Hazrat Ali 8 per cent. Four of the victims have been admitted for inpatient treatment, while Hazrat Ali is currently under observation. Medical staff have indicated that several of the injured remain in critical condition.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with undetected gas leaks in domestic environments, particularly where liquefied petroleum gas cylinders are used. Such incidents typically occur when leaked gas accumulates in enclosed spaces and is ignited by a spark or flame source, such as a cooking stove.
