Following a spell of humid and oppressive heat, the capital experienced much-needed rainfall on Thursday (11 June), bringing relief to residents across multiple areas of the city. Rain began shortly after 2:30 pm, affecting Uttara, Kuril, Baridhara, Gulshan, Tejgaon and several other parts of Dhaka.
From early afternoon, the sky over the capital gradually became overcast, with cloud cover intensifying across different neighbourhoods. Within a short period, the atmospheric conditions turned increasingly unsettled, accompanied by a sense of humidity and gusty winds. This transitional weather pattern culminated in rainfall, which was widely regarded as a respite from the prevailing heat.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, rainfall or thundershowers were likely across all eight divisions of the country on Thursday. The department noted that the south-west monsoon has been gradually expanding its reach, contributing to increased rainfall activity in various regions.
At present, the monsoon system has advanced into Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions. Meteorological forecasts indicate that within the next two to three days, the monsoon may extend further into the remaining parts of the country, leading to more widespread rainfall.
The national weather outlook suggested that many areas in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions could experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds. In addition, some parts of Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions may also witness similar conditions. The possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated locations across the country has also been highlighted.
Separately, the Storm Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that temporary gusty or squally winds, with speeds ranging between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour, may affect regions including Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet. In view of these conditions, river ports in the affected areas have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number one.
