A tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur has claimed the life of a woman and left at least 20 other passengers injured after a passenger bus lost control following a tyre burst and collided with a roadside signboard pole.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night, 10 June, near the Damdama Rahman filling station area along the busy highway. According to police and eyewitness accounts, a passenger bus travelling from the Paglapir area of Rangpur city towards Pirganj suddenly suffered a burst of its front tyre while in motion. The sudden mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Within moments, the bus veered off course and crashed violently into a metal pole supporting a roadside signboard. The impact severely damaged the front portion of the vehicle, leaving it crumpled. Panic spread among passengers, many of whom were jolted from their seats, while several became trapped inside the damaged bus.
Local residents, firefighters, and police personnel quickly rushed to the scene and initiated rescue operations. Injured passengers were extracted from the wreckage and transported to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities confirmed that at least 20 people sustained injuries, with two reported to be in critical condition.
The deceased has been identified as Shamsun Nahar (35), wife of Khosru Mia of the First Bhangha village under Shanerhat area in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. She sustained severe injuries in the collision and was declared dead at the scene.
Police confirmed the details of the incident on Thursday, 11 June, stating that the tyre burst was the primary cause of the driver losing control. Following the crash, traffic movement on the highway was temporarily disrupted but was later restored after the damaged bus was removed from the road with assistance from police and locals.
