Bangladesh Script Historic Australia Collapse

On a day when global attention turned to the opening of football’s grandest spectacle, the cricketing spotlight at Mirpur delivered an equally dramatic storyline as the Bangladesh national cricket team produced a sensational early onslaught against the six-time world champions, the Australia national cricket team, in the second One Day International.

In a contest already charged with context following Bangladesh’s commanding victory in the series opener, the hosts once again dismantled Australia’s top order with astonishing speed at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Opting to bat first in a must-win encounter, Australia endured a nightmare start that will be etched into their limited-overs history.

The innings unravelled almost immediately. On just the third delivery of the match, Australian opener Matthew Short was clean bowled by Taskin Ahmed after playing away from his body to a delivery that jagged back to disturb his stumps. The very next over brought further devastation as Mustafizur Rahman struck twice in rapid succession. Cooper Connolly fell first ball of the over, and Matt Renshaw followed soon after, edging behind to the wicketkeeper.

Within the blink of an eye, Australia found themselves three wickets down without a single run on the board, a statistical rarity in the history of One Day Internationals. The collapse left their innings in immediate crisis and underlined Bangladesh’s disciplined new-ball attack, later complemented by the pace of Nahid Rana in the opening fixture of the series.

Early Australia Collapse

Wicket Batter Dismissal Method Bowler Team Score
1 Matthew Short Bowled Taskin Ahmed 0–1
2 Cooper Connolly Bowled Mustafizur Rahman 0–2
3 Matt Renshaw Caught behind Mustafizur Rahman 0–3

Historically, such a start is almost unprecedented. Australia, who have played over a thousand ODIs, have seen both openers dismissed for ducks on only a handful of occasions, previously against South Africa in 2006 and Pakistan in 2022. However, never before had they lost three wickets without scoring a run until this remarkable passage in Mirpur.

The broader statistical context further highlights the severity of the collapse. Australia had never previously lost three wickets for zero runs in ODI cricket, with their lowest such position before this match being three wickets down for just five runs. In addition, this marked the first time they had suffered back-to-back innings with their opening pair dismissed without scoring, placing them in an unwanted record alongside only a few teams in the format’s history.

Bangladesh’s early dominance not only reinforced their growing reputation at home but also exposed vulnerabilities in Australia’s top order under subcontinental conditions. With momentum firmly on their side after the first ODI victory by 86 runs, the hosts once again demonstrated tactical precision and relentless execution with the ball.

As the innings progressed, Australia faced an uphill battle simply to rebuild, while Bangladesh’s supporters were left witnessing one of the most extraordinary opening spells in modern ODI cricket.
