The Argentina national football team has successfully concluded its World Cup preparations on the pitch, but an administrative security breach has overshadowed their final warm-up match. Prior to their 3-0 victory against Iceland, the confidential passport details of the entire reigning world champion squad were compromised and leaked to the public.
According to international media reports, the data leak occurred due to a critical administrative error in the official player registration sheets distributed before the friendly match. The list, compiled ahead of the fixture at the Jordan-Hare Stadium in Alabama, United States, unintentionally included the visible passport numbers of all squad members, including team captain Lionel Messi.
Standard international media protocols dictate that sensitive personal identifiers, such as passport numbers, must be permanently redacted or blurred before documents are distributed to the press or the public. However, due to an oversight by the organising authorities, these precautions were omitted. The news agency Reuters reported that it had reached out to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for an official response regarding the data exposure. At the time of reporting, neither the match organisers nor the affected Argentine delegation had released an official comment.
Despite the administrative distraction off the pitch, Lionel Scaloni’s side delivered a disciplined performance on it. Playing in front of a capacity crowd of over 88,000 spectators in Alabama, Argentina secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Iceland. This win followed a previous warm-up triumph against Honduras, ensuring a flawless conclusion to their pre-tournament preparations.
Lionel Messi, who has recently returned from an injury layoff, started the match on the substitutes’ bench to manage his fitness. The captain was introduced into the match in the 69th minute. Just two minutes after his introduction, Messi converted a penalty to double Argentina’s lead. Earlier in the match, Valentin Barco had scored the opening goal to put the world champions ahead, while a late strike from Thiago Almada sealed the 3-3 victory.
