The Haiti national football team has been compelled to alter its official kit design just days before its opening match against Scotland. The decision follows a ruling by world football’s governing body, FIFA, which determined that a battlefield depiction on the attire breached international equipment regulations.
During two pre-tournament warm-up fixtures, the Haitian squad wore a kit featuring a depiction of the historic 1803 “Battle of Vertières”. This significant historical event marks the battle in which Haitian forces defeated French colonial troops to secure the nation’s independence. Alongside this depiction, the kit also incorporated the national flag of Haiti.
However, FIFA’s strict Equipment Regulations prohibit the display of certain messages on player attire. The governing body’s guidelines explicitly state that no item of playing kit or equipment may carry “political, religious or personal messages, statements or slogans”. Under these rules, FIFA deemed the historical warfare imagery inadmissible, forcing the Haitian Football Federation to implement an immediate redesign.
Saeta, the Colombian sportswear manufacturer responsible for producing the kit, issued an official statement clarifying the intent behind the original design. The company asserted that the concept was developed to “pay tribute to the men and women who contribute daily to shaping Haiti’s future.” The manufacturer strongly maintained that the imagery was not intended to convey any political message.
The manufacturer’s statement further noted:
“FIFA considered that certain visual elements of the design could be interpreted differently under the light of their equipment regulations. For that reason, the organisation ultimately requested a modification to the design. Although this interpretation did not fully align with our original intentions, we have respected the process and implemented the necessary changes as per the final directives issued by FIFA.”
This kit controversy coincides with Haiti’s return to the global tournament after a 52-year absence. The Caribbean nation will initiate its campaign on 14 June against Scotland at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Competing in Group C, Haiti’s other group-stage opponents are five-time world champions Brazil and Morocco.
Prior to this campaign, Haiti had qualified for the tournament only once in its history, during the 1974 edition held in West Germany. The team’s statistical record from that single tournament, alongside their upcoming Group C fixtures, is detailed below:
| Category | 1974 Tournament Record | 2026 Tournament Schedule |
| Tournament Status | Completed (Group Stage) | Upcoming (Group C) |
| Matches Played / Scheduled | 3 Matches | 3 Matches scheduled |
| Match Outcomes | 3 Defeats | Upcoming: Scotland (14 June), Brazil, Morocco |
| Goals Conceded | 14 Goals | — |

Having complied with the regulatory directive from FIFA, Haiti will now compete in their newly modified, compliant kit for the remainder of the competition.
