India Repatriates Fourteen Trafficked Bangladeshis Via Benapole

Fourteen Bangladeshi citizens who fell victim to human trafficking rings have been repatriated to their home country through the Benapole land border. The group, consisting of both men and women, was delivered to Bangladeshi border officials on Friday evening after being detained in India for unlawful entry, having originally crossed the border under the false impression of securing gainful employment.

The formal repatriation took place at roughly 8:00 pm when the Indian Immigration Authorities at Petrapole transferred the individuals to the Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police. The cross-border movement was made possible via emergency travel permits issued through bilateral diplomatic channels. Documented records indicate that the returnees are residents of Sunamganj, Jessore, and Cox’s Bazar districts.

Border Interception and Judicial Intervention

According to Shariful Islam, the Benapole station representative for the human rights non-governmental organisation Justice & Care, the returnees had been misled by illegal brokers and middlemen. Lured by prospects of a higher standard of living and stable jobs, they crossed into Indian territory through unauthorised border routes, where they were promptly intercepted and arrested by Indian police forces for illegal entry.

Following their initial detention, the Indian authorities presented the migrants before a local court. Their plight was subsequently taken up by an Indian human rights agency, which successfully petitioned the judiciary to secure their release from state custody. The individuals were then transferred to secure shelter homes, where they resided while the relevant ministries in both nations processed the necessary verification paperwork to grant their travel permits.

Immigration Processing and Humanitarian Reception

Syed Mortaza Ali, an official serving with the Benapole Immigration Police, confirmed that his department quickly executed all necessary border entry and documentation procedures. Once processed, the fourteen individuals were placed under the temporary jurisdiction of the Benapole Port Police Station.

The human rights group Justice & Care subsequently assumed responsibility for the group to provide immediate welfare assistance. The organisation has committed to delivering long-term rehabilitation strategies, psychosocial care, and legal aid to assist the returnees in pursuing criminal cases against the trafficking syndicates responsible for their initial displacement.
