Germany commenced their World Cup group stage campaign in Group E with a dominant 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curaçao at the Houston Stadium in Texas. Attended by a crowd of 68,021 spectators, the match concluded with an identical scoreline to Germany’s historic semi-final triumph over hosts Brazil during the 2014 World Cup.
The four-time world champions opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Midfielder Felix Nmecha combined with Florian Wirtz before converting a precise low strike past goalkeeper Eloy Room. Curaçao, under the management of 78-year-old Dick Advocaat, responded in the 21st minute. Midfielder Livano Comenencia seized on a deflection inside the penalty area to strike the ball past veteran German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. This equaliser marked the first-ever World Cup goal scored in the history of the Caribbean nation.
Germany re-established their lead in the 38th minute of play when central defender Nico Schlotterbeck directed an unmarked header into the net following a corner kick delivered by left-back Nathaniel Brown. Julian Nagelsmann’s team extended their advantage further during first-half stoppage time. Following a foul committed by defender Riechedly Bazoer on Nmecha inside the penalty box, forward Kai Havertz successfully converted the resulting penalty kick in the fifth minute of added time, establishing a 3-1 lead at the interval.
Germany intensified their offensive operations immediately after the resumption of play. Merely 69 seconds into the second half, in the 47th minute, Jamal Musiala collected a pass delivered by Joshua Kimmich and placed a finish into the bottom corner of the net.
The defensive line of Curaçao faced consecutive waves of opposition transitions. In the 68th minute, Nathaniel Brown advanced forward into the penalty box on his tournament debut, converting a volleyed finish to register Germany’s fifth goal. Substitute forward Deniz Undav extended the scoreline to 6-1 in the 78th minute by finishing from close range. The final goal occurred in the 88th minute when Kai Havertz latched onto a pass and executed a chip over Eloy Room, securing his second goal of the match and concluding the 7-1 scoreline.
Germany finished the encounter with 64.7% ball possession, executing 26 total shot attempts with 11 on target, whilst Curaçao recorded eight total shot attempts with two on target. With this result, Germany secured three points to lead Group E, whilst Curaçao prepared to face Ecuador in their subsequent fixture on 20 June.
