A tragic and deeply harrowing incident has shaken the community of Dhobaura Upazila in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The body of a five-year-old girl, who had gone missing hours earlier, was recovered from the Kangsa River. While her grief-stricken family initially presumed the death to be an accidental drowning, a horrifying discovery during the ritual pre-burial ablutions has led authorities to suspect that the young child was subjected to a brutal sexual assault before being murdered.
According to local police and family sources, the young girl vanished from near her home in Dhobaura at approximately 5:00 PM on Sunday. When she failed to return, frantic family members launched an extensive search across the neighbourhood, but to no avail.
The search culminated in heartbreak at around 7:30 PM, when local residents spotted a small body floating in a bend of the nearby Kangsa River, a mere 500 yards from the family residence. Relatives rushed to the scene and identity confirmation was made immediately.
The table below outlines the timeline of this devastating event:
| Time | Event / Milestone |
| Sunday, 5:00 PM | The 5-year-old girl goes missing from near her home after a snack. |
| Sunday, 7:30 PM | Local residents spot the child’s body floating in the Kangsa River. |
| Sunday Night (Late) | Family discovers physical trauma during ritual washing; police are notified. |
| Monday, 12:30 AM | Dhobaura Police arrive at the scene to conduct the inquest report (Surathal). |
| Monday Morning | The body is transferred to Mymensingh Medical College morgue for post-mortem. |
The gravity of the situation shifted dramatically late Sunday night. Believing the death to be a tragic drowning, the family prepared the child’s body for a traditional Islamic burial. However, whilst performing the ritual washing (Ghusl), relatives discovered severe physical trauma and wounds on sensitive areas of her body.
Realising that foul play was involved, the family halted the funeral preparations and immediately alerted the authorities. Dhobaura Police officers arrived at the scene at approximately 12:30 AM on Monday morning. Following a preliminary inquest (Surathal), law enforcement seized the body and transported it to the station. On Monday morning, the remains were sent to the Mymensingh Medical College hospital morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
Speaking on the tragedy, the child’s devastated father recounted her final hours:
“Yesterday, after the Asr prayers, my daughter had some tea and biscuits before stepping outside the house. By dusk, we found her lifeless body. I could never have imagined that anyone could commit such an atrocious act against my little girl. They have brutally destroyed my innocent child.”
Shafiqul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhobaura Police Station, confirmed that a rigorous investigation is underway.
“Our initial hypothesis is that the child was criminally assaulted and subsequently murdered before her body was dumped into the river to conceal the crime. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been mobilised to uncover the identity of the perpetrator. We are taking all necessary legal steps to ensure justice is served.”
No arrests have been made at this stage, but local authorities have promised a swift and thorough inquiry into this heinous crime.
