Captaincy Injury Concern Prompts Soumya T20 Selection

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has finalized the addition of left-handed opening batsman Soumya Sarkar to the Twenty20 International squad for the home series against Australia. The squad modification was announced on Tuesday, one day before the opening T20I fixture commences on Wednesday in Chittagong.

The governing body provided no official explanation for the sudden adjustment to the selection pool. However, the decision coincides with fitness complications regarding the team’s designated captain, Litton Das.

Litton sustained a leg injury during the third and final One Day International (ODI) match in Mirpur, which forced him to retire hurt. Although he subsequently returned to the crease to register a half-century—ending a prolonged low-scoring patch in ODI cricket—the batsman was observed limping heavily during physical transitions. Furthermore, he was unable to take the field to perform his wicketkeeping duties during the Australian batting innings.

Performance Data and Squad Dynamics

Soumya participated in two fixtures during the recently completed three-match ODI series. He was drafted into the playing eleven for the second ODI to replace the out-of-form Saif Hassan, scoring 42 runs. His performance fluctuated in the third ODI, where he was dismissed for two runs. His inclusion in the short-form squad provides an immediate alternative at the top of the order should management require cover.

The addition of Soumya expands Bangladesh’s active T20 International roster to 16 players as they transition from the fifty-over format. Team selection remains dependent on the medical evaluation of Litton prior to the first match on Wednesday.
