One Killed in Narsingdi Clash

In a violent clash over territorial dominance in the Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi District, one young man was killed and at least ten others were injured following a gunfight between two rival groups.

The incident occurred early Tuesday (16 June) morning in the Haripur and Dargigaon areas under Nilaksha Union. The confrontation took place between supporters of two local factions led by Nazim Uddin and Alal Munshi.

The deceased was identified as Anik (20), son of former Union Parishad member Osman Mia of the Dargigaon area. According to local accounts, he was aligned with the Nazim Uddin group.

Police and local residents reported that tensions between the two groups had been ongoing for a prolonged period, primarily centred on establishing local influence. The long-standing dispute escalated on Tuesday morning when both sides reportedly engaged in an armed confrontation involving firearms and traditional weapons.

Eyewitnesses stated that during the clash, several youths were seen wearing bulletproof vests and helmets while carrying firearms, contributing to panic among residents in the affected localities.

Casualties and Injuries

Following the exchange of gunfire, multiple individuals sustained injuries, including Anik, Raju, Sumon, Kashem, and Mobarak. The seriously injured were initially taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Anik later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Raipura Police Station, Mojibur Rahman, confirmed that the clash stemmed from a long-standing dispute over local dominance between the two rival groups. He stated that upon receiving information, personnel from the police, Rapid Action Battalion, and the Upazila administration were deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

Law enforcement authorities further confirmed that the situation is now under control, with additional police forces deployed in the area to prevent any further escalation. Surveillance and monitoring activities have also been strengthened to avoid renewed tensions or unrest.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and legal action will be taken based on findings, according to police officials.

The incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of factional rivalry in parts of Raipura Upazila, where disputes over local influence have periodically led to violent confrontations in recent years.
