The death toll from a long-standing dispute between residents of two villages in the Bahubal Upazila of Habiganj has risen to two following dual outbreaks of violence. The confrontations also resulted in injuries to at least 40 individuals, who have since been admitted to various medical facilities for treatment.
The clashes transpired at two separate intervals on Monday, 15 June, involving residents from Adityapur against those from Arichpur and Abdafoujda villages under the Satkapan Union. The deceased have been identified as Selu Miah, aged 53, son of the late Firoz Miah, and Helal Miah, aged 37, both residents of Adityapur village.
According to police and local sources, a dispute had persisted for a considerable period over a thoroughfare adjacent to a graveyard situated between the villages. On Monday, at approximately 1:30 pm, this structural disagreement led to the first round of clashes.
The initial altercation involved the faction of Moshahid Member, representing Arichpur, Abdafoujda, and Kasergaon villages, pitted against the faction of Nasir and Akhter, representing Adityapur village. During the confrontation, both sides deployed native weapons, spears (teta), cleavers (ramda), bamboo sticks, and brickbats. Personnel from the Bahubal Thana Police intervened to bring the situation under control, and subsequently arranged for a local arbitration meeting at 8:00 pm to resolve the dispute.
Despite the administrative intervention, violence erupted for a second time at approximately 6:30 pm in the Dubaoi Bazar area. This subsequent clash escalated severely, with both factions actively utilising sharp weapons.
During the height of the conflict, Selu Miah sustained critical injuries. He was evacuated to the Bahubal Upazila Health Complex, where the attending medical officer pronounced him dead upon arrival. Another resident, Helal Miah, sustained severe trauma and was subsequently referred to the Sylhet MAg Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment; however, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 11:00 pm whilst en route to the facility.
