The Mathbaria Thana Police have resolved the investigation into the homicide of Abdul Kaiyum, a garment businessman from the Tikikata Union within Mathbaria Upazila, Pirojpur. Investigations confirmed that the victim’s biological mother, Minara Begum, aged 53, was directly involved in the killing. Law enforcement personnel have apprehended the suspect, and she has been remanded to prison following a formal court appearance.
According to information obtained from local sources and the Mathbaria police, the deceased, Abdul Kaiyum, had suffered from a long-term substance abuse addiction. On 24 May, a domestic dispute arose over financial resources required to procure narcotics. On the day of the incident, Kaiyum demanded money from his mother to fund his addiction. This demand triggered a severe verbal altercation between the mother and son.
As the confrontation escalated, Minara Begum, acting out of sudden anger, grabbed an axe available inside the residence and struck her son. The impact of the weapon caused severe injuries, resulting in Abdul Kaiyum dying at the scene.
Upon receiving information regarding the homicide, the Mathbaria Thana Police arrived at the scene to secure the body. During the initial forensic examination, investigators searched the personal effects of the deceased and recovered various drug paraphernalia from his wallet. Following the collection of physical evidence from the crime scene, statements from local witnesses, and intensive interrogation of the suspect, the police successfully established the motive and circumstances of the crime.
Rabiul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mathbaria Police Station, confirmed to the press that the arrested suspect, Minara Begum, formally admitted her guilt before the court. She provided a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
