The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a short-term weather warning forecasting the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty winds across at least ten regions of the country by midday. The alert indicates that adverse weather conditions, including rain or thunderstorm activity, may affect several areas with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour.
According to the official warning issued on Wednesday (17 June), and valid for inland river ports until 1:00 pm, the affected regions may experience sudden squally weather conditions originating from the east or south-east direction. The forecast highlights the possibility of intermittent rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or stormy winds.
The areas under the warning include Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogra, Tangail, Mymensingh, Comilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet.
The Meteorological Office stated that wind speeds may temporarily increase to between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour in these regions. Such conditions are typically associated with convective cloud formation during the pre-monsoon and monsoon transition period, often resulting in sudden thunderstorms and short bursts of heavy rainfall.

In addition to the inland forecast, the warning specifically applies to river ports, which have been advised to hoist Signal No. 1 as a precautionary measure. This signal is typically issued when weather conditions may become temporarily rough but are not expected to reach severe storm levels.
Authorities have advised that river transport operators and those engaged in inland navigation should remain alert to sudden changes in weather, as thunderstorms and squally winds can reduce visibility and create hazardous conditions on waterways.
The Meteorological Department’s bulletin emphasised that these conditions are expected within a limited time window, mainly before early afternoon, but cautioned that weather patterns may change rapidly due to atmospheric instability during this period.
