A total of four people have died in the past 24 hours amid suspected measles infections across Bangladesh, according to a recent bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room on Wednesday (17 June).
The health authority also reported a sharp rise in suspected cases, underscoring continued concerns over the spread of the disease. In the last 24-hour reporting period alone, 966 new suspected measles cases were recorded nationwide.
Since 15 March, the cumulative figures indicate a significant public health burden. The DGHS data show that suspected infections have reached 88,895 cases over the period up to 17 June. Of these, 10,634 cases have been laboratory-confirmed as measles, while health officials continue to monitor a large number of clinically suspected patients.
Hospitalisation figures further highlight the strain on healthcare facilities. A total of 73,277 suspected measles patients have required hospital admission since mid-March. Encouragingly, 69,688 of these patients have reportedly recovered and been discharged.
Despite the four deaths reported within the last 24 hours among suspected cases, no confirmed measles-related deaths were recorded during the same period. However, cumulative mortality figures remain a serious concern. Between 15 March and 17 June, a total of 568 children have died with suspected measles, while 93 confirmed measles-related deaths have been documented over the same timeframe.
Public health experts continue to stress the importance of vaccination, early detection, and timely medical intervention to curb further transmission and reduce fatalities, particularly among children who remain the most vulnerable group.
| Indicator | Number of Cases |
|---|---|
| New suspected cases (last 24 hours) | 966 |
| Suspected cases (total) | 88,895 |
| Confirmed measles cases (total) | 10,634 |
| Hospital admissions (suspected cases) | 73,277 |
| Recoveries (discharged patients) | 69,688 |
| Deaths (suspected cases, 24 hours) | 4 |
| Total suspected deaths (cumulative) | 568 children |
| Confirmed measles deaths (cumulative) | 93 |
Health officials have reiterated calls for increased public awareness and expanded immunisation coverage, warning that continued transmission could place additional pressure on already stretched healthcare services if preventive measures are not strengthened.
