Nazrul Year Inauguration Deferred

The launch of “Nazrul Barsha”, a year-long nationwide observance honouring the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, has been postponed, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The decision has been taken to facilitate a more expansive and better-coordinated inauguration ceremony.

Under the original schedule, the three-day opening programme was due to commence on 18 June. However, officials have confirmed that the inauguration will now take place in the final week of June. A revised timetable for the opening events is expected to be released shortly. The authorities said the adjustment aims to ensure broader participation, improved logistical arrangements, and a more inclusive national celebration.

The government had earlier declared that the observance of “Nazrul Barsha” would run from 25 May 2026 to 25 May 2027. The declaration was made during the commemorative events marking the poet’s birth anniversary in Trishal, Mymensingh, on 23 May, a location closely associated with the early life of Kazi Nazrul Islam. The announcement was made by Tarique Rahman.

Preparatory discussions for the year-long programme were reviewed at a meeting of the national committee on Monday, chaired by Cultural Affairs Adviser Nitai Roy Chowdhury. According to officials, planning is now in its final stages, with multiple cultural, academic and community-based initiatives under consideration.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has confirmed that financial allocations have already been distributed to support district- and upazila-level events across the country. A total of 64 districts and 74 remote upazilas will receive dedicated funding to organise local programmes reflecting Nazrul’s literary and musical legacy.

Funding allocation summary

Administrative unit Number of areas Allocation per unit Total allocation
Districts 64 Tk 2.5 lakh Tk 1.60 crore
Upazilas (remote) 74 Tk 1.5 lakh Tk 1.11 crore
Total Tk 2.71 crore

Beyond local events, the ministry has outlined a series of flagship programmes for the commemorative year. These include a large-scale Nazrul Fair, an international conference bringing together Nazrul scholars, and nationwide competitions based on his literary works. A commemorative publication featuring selected writings is also planned.

Additional proposals under review include special broadcasts on Bangladesh Television, university-led research and seminars focusing on Nazrul’s contributions to women’s emancipation, and a major patriotic Nazrul song festival scheduled for December. Organisers are also considering dedicated Ramadan programming highlighting the poet’s devotional compositions, particularly his hamd and naat works.

All proposed initiatives are currently undergoing final scrutiny before formal approval, with officials indicating that the revised inauguration schedule will set the tone for a year-long national cultural observance of unprecedented scale.
