Roger Waters and Palestinian vocalist Mona Miari have collaborated on a newly reworked version of Pink Floyd’s classic track Comfortably Numb, transforming the 1979 rock anthem into a reflective tribute centred on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Released on Thursday across digital platforms, the reimagined recording departs significantly from the original’s expansive stadium-rock production. Instead, it adopts a restrained, intimate arrangement built around acoustic instrumentation, ambient textures and traditional Middle Eastern musical motifs. The result is a sombre reinterpretation that foregrounds grief, memory and solidarity rather than the theatrical detachment of the original composition.
Waters announced the release via social media, describing it as a work “from us to you – the people”, and framing it as an artistic reflection on dignity, truth and collective memory. The project extends his long-standing engagement with politically themed music, while marking a notable cross-cultural collaboration with Miari.
Originally featured on Pink Floyd’s landmark 1979 album The Wall, Comfortably Numb is widely regarded as one of the band’s most iconic works, exploring emotional numbness, alienation and psychological fragmentation through the narrative of a disoriented performer. In this new interpretation, those themes are reframed within a contemporary humanitarian lens.
Both artists contributed additional lyrical material for the reworked version. Miari performs a striking Arabic passage titled “Hind’s Lullaby”, dedicated to six-year-old Hind Rajab. The segment is structured as an imagined dialogue between the child and her mother, designed to evoke loss and the fragility of civilian life in conflict zones. Waters, meanwhile, introduces newly written verses that emphasise accountability, remembrance and the moral weight of witnessing suffering.
The accompanying visual film premiered at New York City’s SVA Theatre, where Waters and Miari attended a special screening. Directed by David Barron, the film incorporates footage from Gaza recorded by cinematographer Suhail Nassar and produced by Yasmin Almokhamad-Sarkisian. The visuals are intentionally restrained and documentary in tone, aligning with the song’s reflective reinterpretation.
