Turkey Knocked Out Following Defeat by Paraguay

Turkey have become the second team to be officially eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 loss to ten-man Paraguay. The Group D encounter, held on Friday evening at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in California, sealed Turkey’s exit from the tournament after just two group matches.

Returning to the global stage for the first time in 24 years—following their third-place finish in 2002—the Turkish national side struggled to establish themselves in the tournament. A 2-0 defeat to Australia in their opening fixture was followed by this narrow loss to Paraguay, ending their hopes of progression. Because of head-to-head tiebreaker rules, Turkey can no longer overtake Australia or Paraguay, rendering their final group match against the United States inconsequential to their qualification status.

Key Match Incidents

  • 65th Minute: Midfielder Matías Galarza scored what proved to be the decisive goal, breaking the deadlock to give Paraguay a 1-0 lead.

  • 45th Minute: Shortly before the interval, Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón was involved in an on-field altercation. He was shown a straight red card for covering his mouth while speaking during the dispute, forcing Paraguay to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

Following the dismissal, Paraguay adopted a heavily defensive approach, successfully protecting their lead until the final whistle.

Statistical Dominance Unrewarded

Turkey applied relentless pressure in the second half but were unable to break down a resilient Paraguayan backline. Despite losing the match, Turkey dominated the statistical metrics:

  • Total Shots: 32 attempts on goal

  • Box Entries: 51 touches inside the penalty area

  • Set Pieces: 12 corner kicks earned

  • Possession: Approximately 80% of the ball

Group D Standing and Outlook

The result significantly alters the dynamics of Group D. Paraguay, who suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to the United States in their opening match, have revived their campaign. They now sit level with Australia on three points, keeping their knockout round aspirations alive. Furthermore, Paraguay’s victory confirmed the United States as the mathematical winners of Group D.

Paraguay will face Australia in their final group match, where a victory would secure automatic progression to the Round of 32. Under the expanded 2026 World Cup format, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams overall, advance to the knockout stages.

Country Played Points Goal Difference Tournament Status
United States 2 6 +5 Qualified (Group Winners)
Australia 2 3 0 In Contention
Paraguay 2 3 -2 In Contention
Turkey 2 0 -3 Eliminated
