Tennis icon Serena Williams is set to make a highly anticipated return to Grand Slam singles competition at Wimbledon, concluding weeks of intense media speculation. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club confirmed on Sunday, 21 June, that the 44-year-old former world number one has accepted the final wildcard place for the ladies’ singles draw.
The tournament organizers validated the news on their official Instagram profile with a direct message to fans:
“This is no drill.”
Williams’ return to the grass courts of SW19 had initially been limited to the ladies’ doubles tournament, where she was scheduled to play alongside her older sister, Venus Williams. However, this newly announced singles wildcard transforms her upcoming appearance into a comprehensive dual-tournament campaign, adding fresh intrigue to the championships when they get underway on 29 June.
Since making her tournament debut as a 16-year-old, Williams has achieved historic success at the All England Club:
| Competition | Titles Won | Matches Won | Final Appearances |
| Ladies’ Singles | 7 | 98 | 11 |
| Ladies’ Doubles (with Venus Williams) | 6 | 45 | 6 |
The mother-of-two, universally regarded as one of the finest athletes in sporting history, last played a singles match at Wimbledon in 2022. On that occasion, she also entered via a wildcard but was eliminated in the opening round by France’s Harmony Tan. Following her appearance at the 2022 US Open later that summer, Williams publicly stated she was transitioning away from tennis, though she consciously avoided using the word “retirement” or submitting formal paperwork.
Her competitive path back to the grass courts began earlier this month in the doubles division. Williams initially partnered Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko at the Queen’s Club Championships to regain match fitness. She continued her tournament preparations this week by competing in the doubles draw at the Berlin Open, fine-tuning her game ahead of her multi-front challenge at the All England Club.
