US Temporarily Waives Sanctions on Iranian Oil Sales

The United States has authorised the production, supply, and sale of Iranian oil whilst negotiations continue towards a final peace agreement. Following a preliminary pact established between Washington and Tehran last week, the US Department of the Treasury issued the official clearance on Monday, 22 June.

This regulatory relief grants Iran a temporary window until 21 August to extract, transport, and market its crude oil, petrochemicals, and other petroleum products. Global energy analysts view this diplomatic breakthrough as a calculated effort to ease geopolitical friction whilst keeping broader diplomatic channels open.

In a statement published on the social media platform X, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlined the reciprocal conditions driving this policy shift. He stated that constructive, ongoing discussions in Switzerland yielded critical commitments from Tehran. Iran has pledged to maintain unhindered maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial transit chokepoint for global energy supplies. Additionally, Tehran has agreed to grant inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) full access to its nuclear facilities.

To formalise this mutual understanding, the Treasury Department issued a temporary 60-day general licence. This specific mechanism allows Iran to re-engage in standard oil commerce without facing the immediate threat of punitive American measures.

The scope of this memorandum extends beyond basic oil extraction. To facilitate seamless trade, the United States has agreed to ease ancillary restrictions on essential financial and logistical sectors. This means that alongside crude oil and petroleum derivatives, associated banking facilities, maritime insurance, and shipping services will benefit from lowered sanctions barriers. Consequently, international financial institutions can process payments for Iranian energy exports during this sanctioned period without triggering secondary penalties.

Despite this tactical concession, Washington has maintained a rigid stance on its broader foreign policy objectives. The terms of the newly issued licence explicitly forbid any commercial or financial interaction with North Korea or Cuba. Existing US sanctions regimes against Pyongyang and Havana remain entirely unaffected, ensuring that the current concessions apply solely to the specific bilateral framework negotiated with Tehran.
