Extreme Heatwave Forces Closure of Over 1,000 UK Schools

An unprecedented summer heatwave has forced the full or partial closure of more than 1,000 schools across England and Wales. Education authorities announced the emergency measures on Wednesday as temperatures soared across the United Kingdom, raising severe health and safety concerns for both children and teaching staff in poorly ventilated classrooms.

The Meteorological Office (Met Office) issued an Amber Extreme Heat Warning covering significant portions of the country. Forecasters warned that actual ambient temperatures in southern England could peak near 37 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists and public health experts noted that high humidity levels would make the “real-feel” temperature significantly higher and more oppressive, presenting acute risks for anyone exposed to the outdoors.

The impact has been felt most acutely in Wales, where more than 500 schools suspended normal operations. Local authorities in central and southern Wales reported widespread disruptions, with the worst affected area being Blaenau Gwent, where every single school was ordered to close. Education offices in Caerphilly and Bridgend similarly suspended classroom teaching, advising parents to keep children at home.

A comprehensive list of Welsh regions experiencing significant school closures includes:

  • Cardiff

  • Carmarthenshire

  • Merthyr Tydfil

  • Monmouthshire

  • Neath Port Talbot

  • Newport

  • Powys

  • Rhondda Cynon Taf

  • Swansea

  • Torfaen

  • Vale of Glamorgan

South of the Welsh border, England is facing an equally daunting climate challenge, with at least 578 English schools shutting their doors or cutting timetables short. The majority of these closures are concentrated across southern counties, where urban heat island effects have exacerbated the stifling conditions. Combined, the closures across England and Wales have disrupted the education schedules of hundreds of thousands of pupils.

The arrival of this extreme weather follows breaking climate records earlier in the week. The Jersey Met Office confirmed that the island recorded its hottest June day in history on Tuesday, with the mercury hitting a staggering 37.2 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit).

Public health agencies and local councils have issued urgent advisories to the public, urging citizens to avoid non-essential outdoor travel during peak afternoon hours. Medical professionals have called for heightened vigilance regarding vulnerable demographics, specifically infants, elderly residents, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. With the extreme heat alert extended into the coming days, infrastructure resilience and public health systems remain under immense strain.
