Bangladesh Opposition Politicians Suspended Following Viral Video Controversy

The Madarganj upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has suspended two local leaders from all organizational activities after compromising videos involving them circulated widely on social media. The disciplinary action, announced on Sunday (5 July), targets Tamim Ahmed Sabuj, the former president of the local Tareq Zia Projonmo Dal, and Sultana Akhter Nishu, a prominent leader within the upazila Mahila Dal, the party’s women’s wing.

The suspension was confirmed via an official press release issued on Sunday afternoon by Mizanur রহমান Akand Ratan, the general secretary of the Madarganj upazila BNP. Speaking to the media, Ratan stated that the individuals have been ordered to refrain from participating in any political or party-led programmes while a formal investigation is carried out. He added that final organizational measures would be enacted following a comprehensive review in consultation with senior district leadership.

Online Backlash and Disappearance of the Accused

According to local political sources, Tamim Ahmed Sabuj, also known locally as ‘Picchi Sabuj’, is the son of Lebu Miah from the Balijuri Paschim Para residential area. Sultana Akhter Nishu, his counterpart in the controversy, resides in the Moslemabad area and is married to Dara Miah.

The disciplinary measures follow the rapid digital dissemination of two distinct video clips. The first clip, lasting approximately 50 seconds, captures an intimate conversation and compromised behavior between Sabuj and Nishu inside a moving CNG-driven three-wheeler. A second 47-second clip depicts the duo traveling together on a motorcycle across a flyover in Jamalpur town, exhibiting similarly close proximity. Both videos triggered intense public scrutiny and localized political fallout immediately after surfacing online.

Attempts by journalists to reach both Sabuj and Nishu for comment have proved unsuccessful, as their mobile phones remain switched off. Multiple local sources indicate that the pair have gone into hiding since the footage became public, leaving them unavailable to clarify or contest the authenticity of the recordings.

Wider Disciplinary Crackdown Within the Party

This controversy coincides with separate punitive action taken against another high-ranking local party official. Nizam Uddin, the joint general secretary of the Madarganj upazila BNP, has had his leadership position suspended following serious criminal allegations. Uddin stands accused of unlawfully detaining the wife of an expatriate worker, extorting money, stealing gold ornaments, and coercing her into a physical relationship.

The suspension order against Uddin was also authorised and signed by the upazila unit’s general secretary, Mizanur Rahman Akand Ratan. In his defense, Uddin has vehemently denied the allegations, claiming that a rival faction within the BNP is orchestrating a political conspiracy to malign his character and damage his standing within the municipality.

Addressing the multiple controversies, Ratan emphasized that the party intends to maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding moral misconduct. He stated firmly that there is no place for corrupt or unprincipled individuals within the ranks of the BNP, reiterating that strict organizational penalties will be uniformly applied to any member found guilty of tarnishing the party’s reputation.
